Filipinas dominate Tajikistan in Olympic Qualifiers

The Philippine women’s football team leaned on Chandler McDaniel’s brace to beat Tajikistan, 8-0, in the 2024 Paris Olympics Asian Women’s Football Qualifiers on Saturday night (Sunday in Manila) at the Hisor Central Stadium in Tajikistan.

The Filipina-American booter, who came from a lengthy absence due to an ACL tear, scored twice in the second half as the Filipinas took the solo lead in Group E with six points on two wins in as many games.

Sofia Harrison, Tahnai Annis, Carleigh Frilles, Quinley Quezada, Meryll Serrano, and Maya Alcantara were the other goal scorers for the Alen Stajcic-mentored national women’s football squad.

Harrison broke the deadlock for the Filipinas with her close range shot at the 26th minute. It was quickly followed by a conversion by team captain Annis two minutes later for a 2-0 advantage.

Frilles, Quezada, and Serrano contributed to the Philippines’ first-half onslaught with connections in the 31st, 35th, and 38th minutes, respectively, before Alcantara closed the first half with another hit for a 6-0 spread.

McDaniel then came on as a halftime substitute, and she delivered in the 60th and 89th minutes to complete the Filipinas’ eight-goal win over the home team.

The Filipinas look to continue their winning ways against Hong Kong, currently in second place in the group with six points as well, on Tuesday evening at the same venue.
