Former Meralco Bolts import and NBA player Terrence Williams has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for defrauding the league’s health and welfare benefit plan.
According to a report from CBS Sports, Williams will also pay more than $3.1 million in restitution and forfeitures along with his 10-year sentence. He has been in jail since last year after threatening witnesses.
“Williams led a wide-ranging scheme to steal millions of dollars from the NBA Players’ Health and Welfare Benefit Plan,” said U.S. attorney Damian Williams. “Williams recruited medical professionals and others to expand his criminal conspiracy and maximize his ill-gotten gains.”
“Williams not only lined his pockets through fraud and deceit, but he also stole the identities of others and threatened a witness to further his criminal endeavors. For his brazen criminal acts, Williams now faces years in prison,” he added.
Williams played briefly for the Bolts in the 2014 Governor’s Cup. He was drafted second overall in 2009 by the New Jersey Nets. He last played in the NBA in 2013 for the Boston Celtics. (MJD)
