Gabe Norwood can’t forget the first time he received an earful from coach Yeng Guiao because of Sol Mercado.
In a podcast by Jared Dillinger, the long-time Rain or Shine forward recounted his worst experience with Sol.
“Your first game with Meralco, you had just been traded, and we played against each other in Cuneta (Astrodome),” said Norwood.
“I had a fastbreak, and you were chasing me down. I think you went up to contest, and, like, I tried to drop a pass behind my back, turning the ball over,” he added. “So Coach Yeng called a timeout, and it was the first time Coach Yeng went off on me.”
Norwood remembered that Guiao was scolding him for not trying to shoot against Mercado because they were best friends.
“He went off on me. It’s because of you, bro,” said Norwood.
Norwood and Mercado were both part of the 2008 PBA draft class. They became teammates in Rain or Shine when Mercado, who was originally picked by the Alaska Aces, was immediately traded to the team in exchange for Joe Devance. (Mark Patriarca)
