Gilas Pilipinas is in talks with naturalized player Justin Brownlee about his possible return to the national team for the November window of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.
National team head coach Tim Cone said he spoke with Brownlee recently as the Philippines continues discussions with the veteran forward regarding his availability.
“We’re having ongoing conversations with him (for possible Gilas Pilipinas return),” Cone said in a Viber message to Fastbreak.
Brownlee has not played for Gilas or Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings since the Philippines’ game against New Zealand last July where he struggled with just five points.
The seven-time PBA champion did not suit up for the national team in the recent FIBA World Cup qualifying window, where they secured wins against Jordan and Iran behind the towering presence of Kai Sotto.
Brownlee was also absent for Gilas Pilipinas in the recent Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan where they failed to reach the quarterfinals for the first time.
Brownlee remains one of the options for the national team ahead of the November qualifiers. Another naturalized player candidate is Bennie Boatwright, who is also being considered for future Gilas duties.
The Philippines is expected to continue assessing its roster as it prepares for the next FIBA World Cup qualifying window. (Adrian Co)
