KAI Sotto’s chances of joining the Miami Heat remain remote despite Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone offering to use his NBA connections to help the Filipino center pursue an opportunity with the franchise.
An NBA agent described the possibility as “unrealistic” when asked by the sports informant Homer Sayson about Sotto potentially landing with Miami through Cone’s assistance.
The assessment comes as the Heat’s roster is already nearly complete, leaving limited opportunities for another big man.
Cone was recently overheard encouraging Sotto to continue chasing his NBA dream and offering to contact Miami on his behalf.
“I still think you need to get in the league. Find a way. I’ll talk to Miami. See what I can do? Would you be willing?” Cone told Sotto after Gilas’ 68-56 victory over Iran in the 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifier on Sunday.
Sotto responded with a nod.
While Cone’s offer could provide the 7-foot-3 Filipino center with an additional connection, there is no confirmation that Miami has expressed interest in signing him.
The Heat already have 15 players on guaranteed contracts, while their two-way slots are occupied. Miami also has Bam Adebayo, Bobby Portis, Nick Richards and Vladislav Goldin among its current centers.
Sotto could theoretically pursue a two-way deal or an Exhibit 10 contract with the Heat. However, those options are non-guaranteed and would provide significantly less financial security than the opportunities available for him in Japan or the US NCAA.
An Exhibit 10 contract could give Sotto a chance to compete in training camp and potentially lead to an opportunity with Miami’s G League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce. A two-way contract would likewise provide a path between the NBA and G League but would not guarantee a permanent spot on Miami’s main roster.
Sotto continues to pursue his NBA ambition while representing Gilas Pilipinas and building his professional career overseas.
Cone’s willingness to make a call could potentially help Sotto get his foot in the door, but with Miami’s roster largely set and few available openings, the Filipino big man’s path to the Heat appears “unrealistic” at this stage. (Adrian Co)
