Gilas Pilipinas still Kings of Southeast Asian basketball
Gilas Pilipinas completed a sweep of the 2019 SEA Games men’s basketball tournament by manhandling Thailand, 115-81, Tuesday night at the Mall of Asia Arena to cop the gold medal for the Philippines.
A spirited Thailand squad gave Gilas a tough first half, trailing the hosts with just 9 points going into the third frame
Unfortunately for them, Gilas eventually decided to up the ante and deliver a 40-point third-quarter storm to open the game wide open.
June Mar Fajardo unloaded 9 of his 17 points in the third period where the Filipinos broke away for good with a quick 10-0 spurt for a 58-39 lead with 7:27 remaining.
Chris Ross also starred in the third frame, setting up the Gilas gunners LA Tenorio, Matthew Wright, and Marcio Lassiter for three-point bombs that highlighted the 40-point third-quarter storm.
Fajardo also added 13 rebounds as he played in perfect harmony with Christian Standhardinger, who led the Philippines with a double-double of his own with his 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Gilas’ victory gave the Philippines’ 18th men’s basketball title.
