Gilas Pilipinas takes second win; beats Chinese Taipei, 90-83

Jayson Castro once again showed why he is the best playmaker in Asia while June Mar Fajardo imposed his will as Gilas Pilipinas rode on a big finishing kick in the fourth quarter to beat Chinese Taipei, 90-83 to book its second win in the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers at the Big Dome.

Chinese Taipei took double digit leads early in the game as naturalized player Quincy Davis lll scored 16 points in the first half. But a counter attack by Gilas kept the team within reach of the Taiwanese.

The first half ended with Gilas barely on top at 44-42.

In the payoff period Matthew Wright made up for the Filipinos poor shooting with two triples to give Gilas a 73-66 cushion. The visitors rallied once more to come within a single basket 73-72. But a 6-0 blast on a Castro three-point play and another Wright trey gave Gilas the upperhand with a more than five minutes to go in the game.

Castro scored 20 points while Fajardo added 17 to make up for Andray Blatche’s sub par performance. Blatche only scored six points on 2 of 9 shooting.
