The Gilas Pilipinas wasted no time in asserting mastery in the men’s basketball tournament by manhandling Singapore, 110-58, in the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Gilas head coach Tim Cone tasked all of his PBA stars to make a statement in the biennial event, and their first assignment proved to be a success.
Team Pilipinas waxed hot as early as the opening tip when Stanley Pringle scored the team’s first eight points of the game.
Gilas never looked with the team’s balanced demolition throughout the game — starting with LA Tenorio and Chris Ross’ playmaking to Stanley Pringle, Matthew Wright, and Troy Rosario hot shooting, and even extending to the towering presence of Greg Slaughter, Junemar Fajardo, and Vic Manuel.
“I think this time will get better, said Cone during the post-gane interview. “The more time they get together, the more games we play I think we’ll be a better team.”
Rosario led the Philippines’ attack off the bench with 15 points, while Gilas first-timer Manuel had a solid debut with 14 points off the bench as well.
Pringle chalked up 14 markers while Wright blazed 13 points .
June Mar Fajardo and Greg Slaughter added 12 and nine markers respectively.
Ross also made his first Team PH appearance count with 10 assists, while Gilas skipper LA Tenorio dished out nine dimes in the matchup.
Meanwhile, Singapore Wei Kwek was the lone double-digit scorer with 10 points..
Gilas will square off against Vietnam in the same venue on Friday.
