Ginebra shrugs off slow start to thwart NLEX in Pampanga

After trailing by as many as 18 points in the opening half, Ginebra leaned on its suffocating defense and bounced back with guns blazing to post a 105-96 win over the NLEX in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Angeles University Foundation Sports Arena in Angeles City, Pampanga Saturday night.

With the win, Ginebra, now 6-3, kept its hopes alive of notching the no. 2 seed for a twice to beat advantage in the playoffs.

Ginebra also stretched its winning streak to 3 to trail Rain or Shine (8-3) and TnT Katropa (7-3) in the race for the no. 2 spot.

Angeles City, Pampanga native Japeth Aguilar led the way for the Kings with 27 points, punctuated with 8 of the team’s last 9 points inside the last two minutes.

The veteran big man also hauled down 8 rebounds.

LA Tenorio added 17 points while Scottie Thompson, Kevin Ferrer, and Greg Slaughter each had 14 points for Ginebra.

John Paul Erram finished with 16 points and JR Quinahan had 15 for the Road Warriors, which started the game with 9 triples in the first half that put them ahead 51-46.

The Road Warriors dropped to 4-6 and put complications in its playoff run.
