Guiao apologizes to Gilas fans over dismal 2019 Fiba World Cup showing
Gilas Pilipinas coach Yeng Guiao offered an apology on Sunday night right after the Philippines failed to win even a single game in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
A 95-75 rout at the hands of Iran completed a dismal World Cup stint for Gilas, which saw them lose their games by an average margin of 29.4 points.
Gilas only showed fight against Angola, losing to the African nation, 84-81, in overtime.
“Well, of course, una, we’re very sorry that we were not able to perform up to ‘yung siguro level na ine-expect nila,” Guiao said after their loss to Iran.
“Kasi gusto lang naman natin na siguro, dikit-dikit lang. Pero even there, hindi natin makayanan,” he added.
Gilas started the tournament on a poor note, getting outscored 37-8 in the first quarter of their first game against Italy. They went on to lose, 102-68, then bowed to Serbia, 126-67, in their second game. They were encouraged by a close defeat to Angola, but never managed to get that breakthrough triumph.
Tunisia also outclassed them, 86-67, last Friday, and while they gave Iran a tough challenge in the first quarter, the Asian powerhouse eventually pulled away from the Philippines as well.
The veteran tactician also noted that the circumstances were not kind to Gilas Pilipinas during the lead-up to the World Cup.
