SAN Antonio Spurs veteran Harrison Barnes has expanded his business interests beyond basketball after investing $25 million in a community bank in his home state of Iowa.
The 34-year-old NBA forward recently acquired Community State Bank in Paton, Iowa, a small town with a population of roughly 220, according to reports.
The investment marks a return to Barnes’ Iowa roots. Born in Ames in 1992, Barnes starred at Ames High School and was regarded as the top high school basketball prospect in the United States as a senior in 2010.
He played two seasons at the University of North Carolina before entering the NBA, where the Golden State Warriors selected him seventh overall in the 2012 draft.
Barnes also developed a strong background in finance while in college. He studied at UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance.
His interest in banking continued while he remained active in the NBA. During the 2026 NBA Finals with San Antonio, Barnes enrolled in the Iowa School for Banking, a professional development program operated by the Iowa Bankers Association.
The bank investment comes as Barnes has accumulated an estimated $224.1 million in NBA earnings throughout his career, according to Spotrac.
Barnes is entering his 15th NBA season and is set to remain with the Spurs after agreeing to a one-year, $8 million contract in June.
He has spent 14 seasons in the league with Golden State, Dallas, Sacramento and San Antonio, winning an NBA championship with the Warriors during the 2014-15 season.
In 1,070 career games, Barnes has averaged 13.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists while shooting 46 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from three-point range.
Although his role has diminished with age, Barnes remains an important veteran presence for San Antonio’s young roster. He started 52 games last season after starting all 82 games the previous year.
His latest move adds banking and community investment to a career that has already extended well beyond the basketball court. (Adrian Co)
