Helterbrand, Ginebra outshoots Purefoods in classic ‘Manila Clasico’ showdown

Jayjay Helterbrand put together a triple-double performance to lead Barangay Ginebra Greats past Purefoods’ legends, 97-89, on Sunday night in the Return of the Rivals exhibition game.
Helterbrand, 42, had 21 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists in the classic Manila Clasico matchup.
Vince Hizon also made a big impact for Ginebra, scoring 16 of his 19 points in the third quarter where the crowd darling Gin Kings pulled away after outscoring the Hotdogs, 39-28.
The Gins won the P100,000 prize for the victory, while Helterbrand and Hizon shared the P25,000 reward for being the Players of the Game.
Hizon hit three three-pointers in the tird canto to stretch Ginebra’s lead at 65-53, which ballooned to 89-74 near the end of the period.
“The Skyscraper” Marlou Aquino, meanwhile, had 15 points and 8 rebounds, Locsin chipped in 14 points and 9 rebounds.
“The Flash” Bal David added 12 points for the Ginebra greats, who were coached by the living legend himself, “The Big J” Robert Jaworski.
Roger Yap had a game-high 27 points, while Paul Artadi and Tony Boy Espinosa each had 14 points for Purefoods, which was handled by Mon Fernandez.
