Helterbrand retires after 17 seasons with Ginebra

JJ Helterbrand is calling it quits.

Just days after helping Barangay Ginebra retain its Governor’s Cup title, Helterbrand has announced his retirement.

In an interview with CNN Philippines’ Sports Desk, Helterbrand revealed his decision to hang up his sneakers after spending his entire PBA career with the Gin Kings.

“Winning a championship right before you retire is the best way to go,” he said.

From a relative unknown in 2000, Helterbrand, formed the other half, along with Mark Caguioa, of the dreaded “Fast and Furious” backcourt tandem of the Gin Kings.

The partnership, regarded as one of the best backcourt tandems in league history, helped the franchise earn six championships.

Helterbrand also won the MVP award and was selected as a PBA All Star seven times.

While there are offers for him out side the hardcourt, Helterbrand says he will take a breather first before deciding on his future.
