Ian Sangalang came alive in 2OT, Magnolia stuns NLEX


Ian Sangalang came alive in the second overtime as Magnolia Pambansang Manok Hotshots cruised to a 112-105 victory over NLEX Road Warriors in the 2021 PBA Philippine Cup on Wednesday at the Don Honorio Ventura State University Gym in Bacolor, Pampanga.

Sangalang opened the second extension with back-to-back inside hits to give the Hotshots a 108-104 lead. After misses by the Road Warriors, Sangalang drained another inside basket to widen the lead to 110-105.

The former San Sebastian College-Recoletos Stags finished the match with 21 points to go with eight rebounds as the Hotshots moved up to solo second place in the standings with 6-2 win-loss slate.

Calvin Abueva tallied double-double 23 points and 12 rebounds, Paul Lee added 18 markers, while Andy Mark Barroca and Aris Dionisio contributed 13 and 11 markers, respectively, for Magnolia.

Down by as much as 16 points in the fourth quarter, the Hotshots slowly clawed its way back on triples by Lee and Dionisio and inside hits by Sangalang. Lee then forced the first extension with his split free throw.

In the first overtime, the Road Warriors were on top 104-101 but Dionisio drilled a three-pointer but failed to surge the Hotshots to victory as he misfired his free throw attempt.

Jericho Cruz led the Road Warriors (4-3) with 21 points, while Celedonio Trollano, JR Quiñahan, Kristoffer Porter and Anthony Semerad added 15, 14, 13 and 12, respectively.
