Inter Miami CF overcame a two-goal deficit to oust FC Cincinnati 3-3 (5-4 penalties) in the semifinals of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup on Wednesday night (Thursday, Manila time) at the TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Benjamin Cremashi took advantage of a missed penalty by Cincinnati’s Nick Hagglund in the fifth round of penalties to seal the semifinals win for Inter Miami with a right-footed shot.
It was an epic come-from-behind win for Inter Miami as it had to erase a 2-0 advantage by Cincinnati, who got a conversion each from Luciano Acosta and Brandon Vázquez.
Leonardo Campana stepped up for Inter Miami with a header in the 68th minute to cut the deficit to 1-2 before scoring a game-tying header in the 90+7 minute from a pass by Lionel Messi.
Inter Miami surged ahead 3-2 early in the extra time via a Josef Martinez right foot shot, but Yuya Kubo of Cincinnati scored with a minute left in the extension to send the semi-finals game to penalties.
Messi, Facundo Frias, David Ruiz, and Martinez made the first four penalties for Inter Miami; the same was true for Cincinnati, courtesy of Kubo, Santiago Arias, Sergio Santos, and Matt Miazga, for a 4-4 score.
Inter Miami will face the winner of the Houston Dynamo-Real Salt Lake semis in a one-game final slated for September 27.
