THE heated Alex Eala-Iva Jovic rivalry has spilled onto social media, with some Jovic supporters hitting back at what they described as toxic reactions from a section of Eala’s fanbase following their dramatic US Open clash.
Jovic and Eala battled through a tense three-set encounter, with the American eventually advancing after a hard-fought match that kept fans on edge.
Following the contest, some social media users who identified themselves as Jovic supporters criticized Eala fans over posts questioning Jovic’s medical timeout and sportsmanship during the match.
One post accused Eala supporters of refusing to accept defeat and blamed Jovic’s medical timeout for allegedly disrupting Eala’s momentum.
Another comment went further, calling Jovic a “fake friend” and questioning why she had raised concerns about coaching from Eala’s camp during the match.
The comments sparked a wider discussion online, with some Jovic fans defending the American from the backlash while others criticized the tone of the posts targeting the 18-year-old.
However, the reactions came from only a section of the fanbases and should not be taken as representative of Eala or Jovic supporters as a whole.
The players themselves showed a much different attitude after their intense battle.
Despite the competitive nature of the match, Eala and Jovic have continued to speak positively about each other and their friendship on tour.
Eala had previously described the sisterhood among young players on tour as an important part of her development, while acknowledging that friendships can be put aside once they step on the court.
Their US Open meeting ultimately provided another chapter in a growing rivalry between two young players who have developed a close friendship away from competition.
While some fans continue to trade accusations online, Eala and Jovic have remained focused on their careers and the competition on the court. (Jesus Nathaniel Valdez)
