The Philippine women’s basketball team absorbed a 95-88 loss in the hands of Japan in its final game in the 2023 William Jones Cup for Women on Wednesday at the Heping Basketball Gymnasium in Taipei.
With the loss, the Gilas women’s squad closed its Jones Cup campaign with a 1-5 record.
Led by Jack Animam, the nationals were leading, 69-65, going into the payoff period. But Chanson stepped on the gas and took over.
Gone to the drain was Animam’s double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds. Janine Pontejos had 20 markers for the team.
Takano Hashikota knocked down eight treys to finish with 32 points for Japan, which also got 14 points, 12 assists, and seven rebounds from Koike Haruke.
Chanson ended the tourney with an immaculate 5-0 record. The Japanese team secured the Jones Cup title.
Gilas’ lone victory was against Iran.
