Jordi Goméz de Liaño a Great Addition to UST Tigers, Says UPIS Coach
University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers has gained a great asset in former University of the Philippines Integrated School Junior Fighting Maroons gunner Jordi Goméz de Liaño.
According to UPIS head coach Paolo Mendoza, the 6-foot-5 sweet-shooting forward will be a great addition for the Growling Tigers, which just lost its key players to various schools last year.
“The UST not only gained a skillful player in Jordi, but a wonderful person. He is young. He is very talented. He is very coachable. He will definitely be a big part of UST’s drive for a winning season,” Mendoza told Fastbreak on Thursday night.
“Although, we wish we could have seen him play for UP, we will always support Jordi wherever he plays. It could be a case of UST’s gain is UP’s loss,” he added. “But, of course, time will always tell. I’m sure Jordi will be able to prove himself to everybody.”
Mendoza, a former Sta. Lucia Realtors standout, further said that he envisions Jordi to emerge as one of the best players in UAAP college basketball under the UST’s basketball program.
“Jordi is probably one of the best, maybe even the best, shooter in the UAAP high school division. His basketball IQ is really one of his assets. He will definitely improve a lot given his raw talent, attitude, height and skill.”
The UPIS mentor also said that he was fortunate to be able to contribute to the growth of Gomez de Liano as a basketball player.
“We are very thankful that we are able to handle a player like Jordi. The UPIS program, I think, has helped him to be the player that he is right now as we always try our best to develop not just the player’s skills but also his character,” Mendoza said.
“But in the end it will always be about the player’s dedication to the program. Jordi deserves all the credit. And also, not to mention the great support that his family has given him,” he added.
