Justin Brownlee’s return to Barangay Ginebra still up in the air, says Cone

BARANGAY Ginebra San Miguel remains unsettled on its import situation as the Kings prepare for the resumption of the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup next month.

Head coach Tim Cone said the team hopes to finalize its reinforcement by the end of the week, with three-time PBA Best Import Justin Brownlee still doubtful to return.

“Our import situation is still unsettled as of now. We hope to have someone by the end of the week,” Cone said in a Viber message to Fastbreak on Tuesday.

Brownlee has not played since Gilas Pilipinas’ game against New Zealand last July. He subsequently missed the early part of the Governors’ Cup as well as the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers and the 2026 Asian Games.

Cone previously said Brownlee’s playing future remains uncertain when asked whether the veteran import was still dealing with an injury or possibly considering retirement.

The 38-year-old Brownlee has been a major part of Ginebra’s success in recent years, but his continued unavailability has forced the Kings to consider other options for the remainder of the Governors’ Cup.

The Gin Kings opened their Governors’ Cup campaign with Riley Grigsby as their reinforcement, but his short-term deal with the team was not renewed.

With Brownlee not currently available, Ginebra is now working to secure a new import before the conference resumes. (Adrian Co)
