Gilas Pilipinas could be in trouble, as Karl-Anthony Towns said that he is 100 percent healthy just days before the FIBA World Cup.
In a report from ESPN, Towns shared some reasons why he decided to play for the Dominican Republic in the upcoming World Cup.
“There was a lot that went into the decision,” Towns said. “The timing is right. I didn’t put as much stress on my body this last season because of the injury. I’m feeling great now; I’m 100% and feeling like myself again. It’s a perfect time to work on some things in my game.”
Towns added that the death of his mother, Jacqueline Cruz-Towns, is also one of the reasons why he chose to play for the World Cup. It was through his mom that he got his Dominican heritage.
The Minnesota big man missed 51 consecutive games during the 2022–2023 season due to an injury. He averaged 20.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 4.8 assists in 29 games last season.
Towns is expected to lead the Dominican Republic, Gilas’ first opponent in the World Cup. Their match-up will be held at the Philippine Arena on August 25. (MJD)
