Although this marks his second FIBA Basketball World Cup stint, for Kiefer Ravena, this experience holds extra significance.
As per the Shiga Lakes’ import, the prospect of playing in front of fellow Filipinos during the World Cup fills him with excitement.
He conveyed his joy regarding the renewed call-up by head coach Vincent “Chot” Reyes.
“Sinasabi ko noon na sana pagpalain tayo na makalaro uli doon, na magkaroon tayo ng second chance sa FIBA World Cup,” Ravena said in a podcast interview hosted by Rodolfo Go Villaruz.
“Sobrang exciting, ‘yun kasi siyempre dito gaganapin, and it is an opportunity to play in front of the Filipino crowd, and we know how they support,” he added.
Ravena personally witnessed the unwavering support Filipino fans provide to Gilas Pilipinas, as demonstrated during the 2019 Southeast Asian Games hosted by the country.
“Noong Southeast Asian Games nga iba na ‘yung Filipino crowd, mas lalo pa dyan dahil FIBA World Cup ‘yan,” said the former NLEX Road Warriors guard.
In 2019, Ravena received his inaugural FIBA World Cup call-up in Foshan, China. However, during that time, under the guidance of head coach Yeng Guiao, Gilas Pilipinas experienced defeat in all five of their matches.
Gilas Pilipinas is set to commence their group stage campaign against the Dominican Republic tonight at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.
