LA Lakers governor Jeanie Buss has absolutely no doubt that the team will retire LeBron James’ jersey after his induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
“When he does so, then we will retire his jersey,” Buss said in an interview with Mark Medina of Sporskeeda. “Knowing that he will make it into the Basketball Hall of Fame, he will have his Lakers jersey retired, no doubt about it.”
However, it is still unclear which James jersey will be retired by the Lakers, as the four-time NBA champion wore number 23 for his first three years with the Lakers. He changed to number 6 during the 2021–2022 season.
Earlier this month, James’ agent, Rich Paul, announced that the Lakers superstar would switch back to number 23 for the upcoming NBA season.
“It’s LeBron’s decision,” Paul said. “He chose to out of respect for Bill Russell.”
Buss said that retiring both numbers 23 and 6 in honor of James is “a discussion for another time.”
The Lakers franchise retired numbers 8 and 24 on December 18, 2017, in honor of Kobe Bryant. (MJD)
