Former Gilas player LA Tenorio advised the members of the current national team pool for the FIBA World Cup to avoid using social media apps as the tournament draws near.
Tenorio recalled their experience before the 2014 World Cup, when their team captain, Jimmy Alapag, told them to refrain from browsing their social media accounts.
“As Jimmy said, ‘you can’t read social media,’ so when we started preparing and during the tournament proper, we were really disciplined,” the Ginebra guard said in an interview with PlayitRight TV.
“As a pro, we could have said, We’re old enough not to be told what to do,’ but again, in every competition [we went], every tournament, [we’re out] 42 days during the preparation, we went all over the place and trained and played [in various] tournaments,” he continued.
The 2014 version of Gilas won one game out of their five assignments in the group stages of the tournament. The victory gave the Philippines its first FIBA World Cup win since 1974.
Meanwhile, the 2023 World Cup will begin in the last week of August, with Gilas scheduled to face Angola, Italy and Dominican Republic.
Until now, the final 12 of the national team is yet to be announced. (MJD)
