Lams Lamina had a more significant impact as the National University Lady Bulldogs’ starting setter than Abe Pono during the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament.
According to former Lady Bulldog Erin May Pangilinan, while Pono also did a great job during her time as the starting setter, NU’s level of play—and more importantly, their wins—shifted when Lamina returned to the lineup.
“Lamina was not at the first six on some games, but its a good thing na binalik siya kasi nakita kung ano ‘yung kayang gawin ng team with Lamina,” Pangilinan said in an interview with Bilyonaryo News Channel’s Unpopular Opinion.
“Though Pono did a great job, pero the difference of Lamina playing is ano talaga parang mas naging malaking effect ng wins nila,” added the former Cignal Super Spikers player.
Pangilinan pointed out that Lamina’s presence brought better rhythm and cohesion, which translated to improved results for NU compared to earlier stretches with Pono handling the role.
She added that NU’s slow start—due to adjustments to a new coach and system and the absence of key players Bella Belen and Alyssa Solomon—also played a role in the team missing out on the top spot.
“Well I think, based on watching from the sideline, NU had a rough start finding the groove, especially new coach, new system, so it is really hard, especially ilan sa first six ang nawala,” she said.
The defending champions Lady Bulldogs are set to square off with the De La Salle University Lady Spikers in Game 1 of the UAAP Finals this afternoon at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. (AC)
