The Philippine Under-23 men’s football team conceded a late goal as Laos escaped with a 2-2 draw in their face-off during the 2023 AFF U-23 Championship on Friday in Thailand.
The young Azkals apparently headed to a victory as goals by Selwyn Mamon and Dennis Chung had them leading 2-1.
In the 23rd minute, Mamon scored the opening goal for the Philippine squad, but Khamsa Phimmasone of Laos equalized in the 39th minute.
Chung then made his mark in the second half with a goal in the 90th for the Philippines’ 2-1 lead.
Just when everybody thought that the Filipinos had already secured the win, Souphan Khambai One pulled off a surprise by scoring a goal for Laos in the three-minute added time.
This means the Azkals and Laos get one point each in Group C.
The Filipinos will next take on Vietnam on Tuesday.
