LeBron James will once again wear jersey number 23, the first number he wore when he entered the NBA in 2003.
This means that LeBron will be letting go of the number 6, which he used during his time with the Miami Heat when he won two championships.
“King James” also wore the same number when he left the Cleveland Cavaliers to join the Los Angeles Lakers back in 2018.
According to LeBron’s agent, Rich Paul, the decision to change his jersey number is out of respect for Bill Russell.
“It’s LeBron’s decision. He chose to do it out of respect for Bill Russell,” Paul said.
In July 2022, Russell passed away at the age of 88. The league decided to retire the No. 6 jersey across the league as a tribute to the Boston Celtics legend.
Players who were wearing number 6 at the time of the announcement can continue wearing the said jersey number if they choose to do so. (Mark Patriarca)
