Leylah Fernandez advances to Singapore Open quarters

Leylah Fernandez celebrating her victory during the Singapore Tennis Open.

LEYLAH Fernandez continued her strong run at the Singapore Tennis Open after dispatching Alycia Parks, 6-4, 6-3, in the second round on Wednesday night.

The world No. 31 needed one hour and 30 minutes to secure the victory on the hard court and advance to the next round of the WTA tournament.

Fernandez gained some measure of revenge against Parks, who defeated the Filipina-Canadian 6-4, 6-4 on clay earlier this year.

The victory marked Fernandez’s fourth win in her last five matches. She had also posted hard-court victories over Kyoka Okamura, Mananchaya Sawangkaew and Shuai Zhang during her recent stretch.

Fernandez has now won seven of her last 11 matches on hard courts, including victories over Mirra Andreeva and Filipina Alexandra Eala.

Parks, meanwhile, had gone 4-6 in her previous 10 hard-court matches, including her Singapore opener. She had recently suffered defeats to Sara Bejlek, Ann Li and Viktorija Golubic.

Fernandez’s straight-sets triumph keeps her campaign in Singapore on track as she continues her return to hard-court competition. (Adrian Co)
