Leylah Fernandez gets boost from Nets coach Steve Nash
Not only did NBA legend Steve Nash provided inspiration for Fil-Canadian Leylah Fernandez in her spectacular US Open run — he was also present at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, sitting beside the Fernandez family.
The 19-year old outlasted World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus on Friday to enter the finals of the New York-based Grand Slam.
The Brooklyn Nets head coach cheered for Fernandez throughout her matches, and it meant a lot for the youngster.
“It’s a huge inspiration,” she said after the game. “I remember when I was younger, my dad used him as an example, and told me I had to work hard and fight hard like Steve Nash, so it’s an honor to have him here watching me and cheering for me.”
Fernandez definitely wants to be friends with Nash after the event.
“Hopefully we can have a tennis match soon,” she said.
