The Leyte Colleges recovered from a sluggish start to defeat Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology, 19-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-16, in the 2023 ROTC Games Visayas Leg on Wednesday at the University of San Agustin Gymnasium in Iloilo City.
Sig Dacillo led the way with 13 points for Leyte College, which earned a slot in the semifinals round after winning all three of their matches in the elimination round.
Looking invincible in the first two games with straight-set victories, the Tacloban-based Leyte Colleges were caught off-guard by the Salazar Colleges, which got off to an inspiring start behind Ronamie Capuras.
Leyte College, however, weathered some anxious moments in the ensuing sets with Dacillo carrying the fight for the squad, which moved one win away from earning a ticket to the national finals set in October.
“Maging kalmado lang, maging ready at alert ‘yun lang ang kailangan at i-observe kung paano ang takbo ng bola,” Leyte College head coach Bob Montejo reminded his wards after a rough opening set that saw them commit several miscues.
Capuras registered a game-high 16 points in a losing cause for the Salazar Colleges.
