THE Philippine volleyball scene could soon expand to include a professional league for men following discussions between Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) president Frank Lao and Maharlika Pilipinas Volleyball League founder Manny Pacquiao.
According to a report by Abante online, Lao and Pacquiao recently met to discuss possible ways to strengthen the sport, including securing support for the national teams and expanding grassroots and developmental competitions.
Details of the meeting were not disclosed, but the discussions reportedly included plans to establish a professional platform for male volleyball players in the country.
The move would complement the existing MPVL, which currently focuses on the women’s game and features teams representing local government units.
A men’s professional league would provide local players with another avenue to compete at a high level while potentially creating a wider pool of talent for the national team.
The PNVF and its new leadership are also looking to develop more grassroots programs as part of efforts to broaden participation and strengthen the country’s volleyball program. (Adrian Co)
