University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers’ loss could be a huge gain for the Mapua University Cardinals.

Cardinals head coach Randy Alcantara said former Growling Tiger Ferdinand “Jun” Asuncion is a huge addition to his squad with his high basketball IQ.

“He has high basketball IQ and good defensive skills,” Alcantara said in an interview with Josef Ramos of The Manila Times. “I think his attitude and skills are enough to help the team.”

Alcantara said he was familiar with Asuncion since he was a former assistant coach of Aldin Ayo at the Growling Tigers camp.

“Magkasama kami noong time na nag-assistant ako sa UST…noong 2018. So, kinausap ko ‘yung bata. Kinamusta ko ‘yung bata at kilala ko naman siya,” Alcantara said.

Asuncion was the fifth player to depart from Growling Tigers aside from CJ Cansino, Rhenz Abando, Ira Bataller and Brent Paraiso.

Asuncion was used sparingly by Ayo in his rookie season with the Tigers. He, however, showed promise in the offseason for UST with his improved outside shooting.
