Margielyn Didal Officially Qualifies to 2020 Tokyo Olympics
Filipina skateboarder Margielyn Didal has formalized her qualification as the 10th Philippine athlete to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics starting next month.
Didal was one of the 20 skateboarders that will compete in the women’s street skateboarding event, based on the formal announcement of World Skats on Thursday.
The skateboarding discipline is making its Olympic debut in the upcoming Summer Gamed and the event will be held from July 25 to 26 in Tokyo, Japan.
The Cebuana skateboarder made her Summer Games stint possible due to her world ranking after the World Skate Championships last week in Rome, Italy.
The 22-year-old Didal, who won gold in the women’s street events in the Asiad in 2018 and in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, is currently ranked 14th in the world.
It took days for Didal to formalize her Olympic qualification after missing out on a outright berth when she finished 17th in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament’s semifinals round last Friday.
However, helping to maintain Didal’s high world ranking was her semifinals finish during the Dew Tour Des Moines in Des Moines, City of Iowa last month.
Didal will join earlier Tokyo Olympics qualified athletes in weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, boxers Eumir Marcial, Irish Magno, Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam, gymnast Caloy Yulo, pole vaulter EJ Obiena, taekwondo Jin Kurt Barbosa, and rower Cris Nievarez.
