Meralco shocks San Miguel to earn shot on last playoff spot
Meralco leaned on import Delroy James in the clutch to stun San Miguel, 95-91, on Wednesday evening at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum to earn a playoff shot at the eighth and final quarterfinal spot in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
James scored six straight points to catapult the Bolts to a 4-7 record to tie Alaska and Phoenix Pulse for the eighth place.
Meralco and Alaska, however, got the two places in the sudden-death playoff for the eighth spot due to superior quotients over Phoenix.
James finished the game with 34 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds.
San Miguel, meanwhile, saw its three-game winning streak come to an end and finished the eliminations at 5-6.
San Miguel’s playoff position will be determined by the result of the TNT-Magnolia game later in the night.
A loss by Magnolia will drop San Miguel to seventh place in the standings – and twice-to-beat disadvantage against NorthPort in the pairings – and move Rain or Shine up to sixth seed in the quarterfinals.
