Meralco spoils Slaughter’s return
Meralco overcame an early deficit to beat defending champion Barangay Ginebra, 93-78 in the PBA Governor’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
It was the Bolts second straight win in the tournament and their first against Ginebra this season.
Allen Durham missed a triple double after posting 30 points, 24 boards and nine assists as the Bolts welcomed Greg Slaughter’s return to Ginebra with a resounding win.
Meralco coach Norman Black credited the win to team effort.
“I’m very happy with out effort tonight especially on the defensive end. We played good defense the entire game. A lot of people were involved with that. Cliff Hodge did a great job today,” Black said.
The Bolts got off to a slow start in the first quarter with Ginebra posting a 30-19 advantage. Meralco, however, fought back in the second and third quarters to coast to victory.
“LA Tenorio got off to a quick start but after that I thought Chris Newsome picked up his defense against LA. I think overall it was just a great defensive effort,” added Black.
Tenorio led Ginebra with 16 points but import Justin Brownlee was only able to add 13 points.
Slaughter scored 14 points, 14 rebounds, three blocks and one assist for his first game in 10 months due to an ACL injury.
