MPBL teams reportedly offering higher salaries than PBA squads

Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) teams with deep financial backing are allegedly offering star players more lucrative contracts than those in the PBA.

Sports insider Snow Badua pointed out that the PBA needs to reevaluate its salary cap rules, as MPBL franchises are extending deals ranging from P400,000 to P1.5 million per month to top-tier players.

“The PBA needs to revise its salary cap, especially for rookies. Hindi na lang Japan BLeague, Taiwan T1, at Korean Basketball League ang kalaban nila ngayon sa talent,” Badua wrote in a Facebook post.

Badua revealed that Dave Ildefonso received a P400,000 offer from an MPBL team, far exceeding the P150,000 proposal from NorthPort Batang Pier, which drafted him in the PBA Season 49 Rookie Draft.

Likewise, Encho Serrano was offered P400,000—more than double the P90,000 rookie salary and the P180,000 renewal deal from the Phoenix Fuel Masters.

Veteran big man Vic Manuel reportedly received a P600,000 monthly offer from the MPBL, surpassing the P350,000 deal from Terrafirma Dyip. Meanwhile, Gregory Slaughter allegedly secured a P1.2 million monthly salary with the Manila Stars, a significant jump from the P420,000 he earned with Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.

Newly retired center Christian Standhardinger was also offered P1.2 million per month by the Abra Weavers, nearly three times the PBA’s maximum monthly salary of P420,000, which Terrafirma had reportedly offered.

“’Yung mga players naman, pag may alok na kayo, wag na kayong patweetums, HINDI NAMAN PARANG UNLI-RICE ang offer SA PARES OVERLOAD restaurant,” Badua concluded in his post.
