NCAA ’93: Stags humble Chiefs in own turf

San Sebastian made sure it will not wilt in the payoff period again to post an impressive 65-56 victory against Arellano University in Season 93 of the NCAA at the Arellano Gym in Legarda.

Learning from their mistakes against San Beda College in the opening day, the Stags went to their defense to take the sting out of the Chiefs in the closing minutes of the game.

“We learned in our San Beda loss that we couldn’t relax in the fourth quarter,” San Sebastian coach Egay Macaraya said.

San Sebastian opened the game with a scathing 24-8 run to silence the hostile home crowd.

The Chiefs, however, came back in the game by slowly chipping the Stags’ huge lead to drive the crowd into a frenzy. Kent Salado’s lay-up pulled the Chiefs within two, 52-50.

It was then the Stags went on to apply the breaks against the rampaging Chiefs.

San Sebastian’s defense took over the game much to the frustrations of Salado and Archie Concepcion who were slapped with unsportsmanlike fouls.

Making matters worse was the ejection of Marwin Taywan who hit Allyn Bulanadi in the head.

The Stags went on to 13-6 run in the closing minutes to win the game.

“We made a conscious effort to play with more intensity and defend harder in the fourth quarter,” Macaraya added.

Michael Calisaan paced the Stags with 12 points and 13 rebounds with Bulanadi and John Michael Calma adding 10 markers apiece.

Salado scored a game high 15 points but couldn’t prevent the Chiefs from absorbing their first loss in two starts.

With the win, the Stags improved to an even 1-1 win loss slate.
