‘Next Man Up’ Tyler Tio rises to the occasion

No Matt Nieto? No problem for Ateneo.

With Tyler Tio stepping up to fill the void that their starting guard left, the Blue Eagles defeated UP Fighting Maroons, 83-66, on Sunday, October 14 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The second year guard also played a huge part on their win, finishing with 12 points and five assists.

For Tio, he was just sticking to the team’s principles whenever they play with a depleted lineup.

“We have a philosophy in the team na ‘Next Man Up’ so when Matt [Nieto] went down, obviously, we were hurt because he’s one of our better players, one of our leaders,” Tio explained.

“So the captains and the coaches talked to us point guards and told us we really need to step up,” he added.

Indeed, his performance propelled Ateneo at the top of the standings with 6-2 win-loss slate.

However, the Xavier standout also gave credit to his fellow guards – SJ Belangel, Jolo Mendoza, and Adrian Wong – for also doing a great job on their frontcourt duties.

“I give props also to Jolo, SJ, and Adrian. It wasn’t just me who stepped up so we just wanted to fill the void left by Matt,” Tio quipped.
