NLEX’s Raul Soyud Gets Gilas Pilipinas Call Up For 2021 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers
Following his solid season for the NLEX Road Warriors, Raul Soyud has received a call up to join the Gilas Pilipinas training pool in preparation for the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualifier next month.
Gilas team manager Gabby Cui said the Bago City, Negros Occidental-native Soyud is set to enter the Gilas training bubble at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna on Friday.
The inclusion of the 30-year-old Soyud did not come as a surprise following his career-high conference for the Road Warriors in the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup where he averaged 10.0 points and 6.8 rebounds.
The effort of the 6-foot-6 Soyud allowed him to land a spot among the candidates for the season’s Most Improved Player award and secure a two-year contract extension with the Road Warriors.
Soyud will be the sixth PBA player to join the Gilas training bubble aside from Road Warriors teammate Kiefer Ravena, Justin Chua of Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters, Terrafirma Dyip’s Jaymar Perez and TNT Tropang Giga’s Roger Pogoy and Jeth Troy Rosario.
Already inside the bubble along with Ravena, Chua and Perez were Gilas Cadets Isaac Go, Matt Nieto, Mike Nieto, Rey Suerte, Javi Gomez de Liano, Dave Ildefonso, Justine Baltazar, Calvin Oftana, William Navarro, Kenmark Carino and Angelo Kouame.
The Gilas Pilipinas currently has 3-0 record after winning over Indonesia last February and against Thailand twice in November, 2020. They only need a win to formalize its entry to the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup in Lebanon.
