No Jones Cup for Gilas; Guiao looks for mini-tourneys to prepare for World Cup
Gilas Pilipinas will just have to participate in other mini-tournaments to prepare for the Fiba World Cup as their stint with the Jones Cup becomes unlikely.
National team head coach Yeng Guiao said he initially wanted Gilas to participate in the Jones Cup, but the schedule clashes with the PBA calendar.
“Mukhang malabo yung Jones Cup dahil napakatagal po noon. Almost 2 weeks iyon at medyo madi-disrupt ang schedule ng PBA,” Guiao said in a recent radio interview.
“‘Di naman pwedeng magsuspend ulit ang PBA games habang wala ang kanilang superstars,” he added.
Even Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Al Panlilio admitted it would be tough to allow Gilas to compete in the Jones Cup from July 12-21.
“Medyo mahirap ipasok sa calendar,” said Panlilio.
The PBA suspended its games for 2 weeks when Gilas competed in the final window of the FIBA World Qualifiers.
The good thing about pocket tournaments, said Guiao, is that they can invite the best teams in Asia and play against them at home.
