NU outlasts FEU in OT to complete season sweep

A strong win for the NU squad!

The Bulldogs completed a season sweep against FEU Tamaraws in a 85-79 overtime victory in the UAAP Season 82 men’s basketball tournament at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday October 9.

The Jhocson-based troops went on a rampage in the third canto that saw them their biggest lead of the game, 53-35.

However, FEU made some huge adjustments in the final frame despite a 50-65 lead by NU, forcing turnovers after turnovers which eventually became a 67-65 advantage — all thanks to their 17 unanswered points.

Dave Ildefonso and John Lloyd Clemente, the only Bulldogs who scored from the payoff period, made crucial three-pointers for NU, only for Barkley Eboña to score FEU’s last four points to force the game into overtime, 71-all.

This time, NU sparked an 8-0 run courtesy of Issa Gaye’s two free shots, plus a back-to-back triples from Ildefonso and Clemente.

NU would then cruise their way to their second win of the season to improve their record at 2-7.

Ildefonso bounced back from an inefficient game against La Salle on Saturday by posting a double-double of 28 points and 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs.

“We just came back to basics. What was the formula? Going back to basics and staying in level one,” said NU head coach Jamike Jarin right after he brought the whole squad to the press room.

Issa Gaye also contributed a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, while John Lloyd Clemente added 15 markers (4-of-5 shooting from the three-point line) and eight boards.

Meanwhile, FEU collapsed at the fifth spot with a record of 4-5 despite Barkley Eboña’s double-double effort of 15 points and 12 rebound.
