Olga Carmona drilled a last-minute goal to lift Spain to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Finals with a 2-1 victory over Sweden in the semifinals on Tuesday afternoon at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand.
With the score tied at 1-1, Carmona was undefended from outside the box to strike a long-range kick that pinged off the crossbar and into the goal at the 90th minute mark of the contest.
Ten minutes before Carmona’s heroic conversion, Spain drew first blood in the tightly contested semifinals game, with Salma Paralluelo connecting from inside the box despite being defended by two Swedish players.
Sweden, the third-ranked squad in the competition, managed to tie the score in the 89th minute, with Rebecka Blomqvist eluding her defenders to connect from inside the box.
This will be the first FIFA Women’s World Cup final appearance for the No. 6-ranked Spain, which had a massive rebuilding prior to the competition as almost half of the team opted to leave.
The “La Roja ” will face the winner of the Australia-England semifinals in the championship game on Sunday evening.
