THE Premier Volleyball League (PVL) has cancelled its On Tour doubleheader scheduled on Saturday, August 8, at the Santiago Sports Arena in Isabela as tropical depression ‘Maymay’ continues to affect parts of Northern Luzon.
The league said on Friday that the decision was made with the safety of players, coaches, officials, fans and event personnel in mind.
The twin bill was supposed to feature ZUZ Coffee Thunderbelles taking on PLDT High Speed Hitters in the opening match, followed by the clash between Capital1 Solar Spikers and Creamline Cool Smashers.
Aside from weather concerns, the cancellation of flights to Isabela since Thursday also affected the staging of the event.
PVL president Ricky Palou apologized to volleyball fans who are expected to watch the matches in Santiago City.
“We sincerely apologize to our fans in Santiago City and the rest of Isabela who were looking forward to the matches,” Palou said.
“While we share everyone’s disappointment, the safety of our fans, players, coaches, officials, and staff must always come first. We appreciate everyone’s understanding and support during this time.”
Despite the postponement, Palou assured supporters that the league remains committed to holding PVL games in Santiago City.
“We made a promise to bring the PVL to Santiago City, and we intend to keep that promise. Although we were forced to cancel this weekend’s games because of circumstances beyond our control, we look forward to returning to Santiago during the upcoming PVL All-Filipino Conference,” he said.
The league also announced that fans who purchased tickets for the cancelled games will receive refunds. Details of the refund process will be released through Ticketmax’s official channels.
The PVL On Tour has enjoyed strong support in its previous stops in Ilagan City, Batangas City, Vigan City and Polomolok, South Cotabato, where large crowds turned out to watch the matches. (Adrian Co)
