Pablo, Cabañero keep Gilas 3×3 focused after perfect Asiad start

Luis Pablo and Nic Cabañero keeping Gilas Pilipinas 3x3 focused after a perfect start at the Asian Games.

GILAS Pilipinas men’s 3×3 squad stayed perfect in the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games after beating Sri Lanka, 21-12, on Monday at the Kinjo Futo Station Square Venue in Japan.

The victory gave the Philippines a 2-0 record in Pool A after also defeating Mongolia in its first assignment, but Luis Pablo knows the team cannot afford to dwell on its strong opening day with Kazakhstan next on Wednesday.

“Grateful kami na we got the 2-0 win. Pero, ayun nga, this is the crucial part, iyung quick turnaround heading into the next game,” said Pablo.

Pablo stressed that the team’s attention has immediately shifted to its next assignment.

“Ang main focus na namin is iyung next game. Whatever happened today, we’re grateful and blessed. But, ayun nga, we have to move on because it’s the beginning pa lang ng tournament,” he added.

Nic Cabañero once again came up big for Gilas, scoring eight points while adding six rebounds and two assists.

For Cabañero, composure and defense made the difference in another winning performance.

“We just need to stay composed. Yung defense talaga nagdala sa amin ng panalo,” according to Cabañero.

The veteran guard also highlighted the team’s chemistry after overcoming a slow start against Sri Lanka.

“Nakita natin kung paano iyung teamwork namin. It doesn’t matter how you start the game, it’s how you finish it,” added Nic.

With two wins already secured, Cabañero said the team is dedicating its early success to everyone supporting them.

“This glory is for our countrymen, to ourselves, and to our loved ones,” Cabañeto said.

Gilas now shifts its attention to Kazakhstan as it looks to preserve its unbeaten record and continue its push in the 3×3 competition. (Jesus Nathaniel Valdez)
