Perez, Pirates extend unbeaten run to 10!
Lyceum of the Philippines University tightened its defensive screws in the fourth quarter in routing San Sebastian, 88-70, to extend its win streak to 10 in the 94th NCAA basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.
Up by just six points after three quarters, the Pirates held down the Stags to just 11 in the fourth period while exploding for 23 points to keep the former’s record immaculate while keeping their stranglehold of the solo lead.
CJ Perez, the reigning league MVP, and twins Jaycee and Jayvee Marcelino did most of the damage as they led LPU with 21, 17 and 14 points, respectively.
“Big win for us because before this game, we reminded ourselves that this team is playing like a Final Four team even though they’re at 10th,” said LPU coach Topex Robinson.
The troika were responsible for helping LPU erect a 27-13 lead at the end of the opening quarter when they combined for 17 points.
When Michael Calisaan exploded for 16 of his total 17 points in the next two quarters to push San Sebastian to within a single-digit, 59-65, entering the last canto, it was also Perez and the Marcelinos who made the key plays on both ends of the court in helping LPU seal the deal.
RK Ilagan chipped in 13 points on his first game since getting suspended by his own team for playing in a league outside the NCAA that led to their two wins against Jose Rizal and College of St. Benilde being forfeited.
Ilagan’s return wasn’t enough for the Stags to survive the Pirates’ fourth quarter pillaging and fell to their ninth setback against a win.
