PH Team recovers from shooting woes, wins at home against Qatar

Gilas Pilipinas made a huge adjustments in the second half after a shaky start from both ends on the floor, as they defeat Qatar in front of the 220 selected audiences, 92-81 in the fourth window of 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum on Monday.

Gilas Pilipinas’ 1-of-15 shooting from beyond the arc still proved to be detrimental during the first half. Meanwhile, Qatar was efficient on all areas even leading by as much as 17 points in over six minutes left, 20-37.

However, the national team opened the second half with a newfound energy by improving their overall defense and attacking relentlessly from the paint after being down by 39-52.

Scottie Thompson provided quality minutes by setting plays and grabbing four offensive boards to lead Gilas’ attack. Japeth Aguilar’s jumper in the 3 minute mark secured their lead until the final buzzer.

The national team would outscore Qatar 28-12, and their momentum would continue until the final canto.

Aguilar was uncontainable from the inside, tallying 16 points and eight rebounds in the process.

Alex Cabagnot scored 10 of his 16 points from the payoff period, while Stanley Pringle chipped in 13 markers, six rebounds and three assists.

Philippines recovered from a faltering loss against Iran last Thursday, as they improved to a 5-3 record in Group F.
