Korea Republic eked out a hard-earned 1-0 win over a stubborn Philippine Azkals in their Group C opener of the 2019 Asian Cup at Al Maktoum Stadium in Dubai, UAE.
Not given much of chance even before the match started, the Azkals played magnificent defense against the South Koreans until the Taeguk Warriors made a breakthrough in the 66th minute.
Hwang Ui-jo scored the lone goal to give the overwhelming favorites the lead.
The Azkals fought hard to gain the equalizer but even the late entry of Phil Younghusband in the dying minutes of the game could not prevent the South Koreans from taking the full three points.
The Azkals will next face China on Friday, January 11 at Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
