The Philippines is poised to become a two-time host on the WTA calendar next year, with a WTA 125 tournament scheduled in January and a new WTA 250 event planned for the latter part of 2027.
The Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA) confirmed that the country has secured hosting rights for the additional WTA 250 tournament, which is expected to be staged in late October or early November as part of the tour’s Asian swing.
“We’re happy to announce and confirm that late last night, we threshed out some details with our franchise holder of the WTA 250. We’re going to have a WTA 250 next year, 2027, in late October or early November,” PHILTA secretary general John Rey Tiangco said.
The new event will follow the Philippine Women’s Open, a WTA 125 tournament that is scheduled for January.
The inaugural Philippine Women’s Open was held earlier this year, with Colombia’s Camila Osorio capturing the championship. Filipina star Alex Eala also competed in the tournament but saw her campaign end in the quarterfinals.
According to PHILTA, the WTA approved the Philippines’ application to host the additional tournament the previous week.
The country’s growing presence on the international tennis calendar comes amid Eala’s continued rise on the global stage.
The Filipina recently concluded her Asian Games campaign with a bronze medal after bowing to China’s Xiyu Wang in the women’s singles semifinals.
The addition of a WTA 250 event would give Philippine tennis fans another opportunity to watch a higher-tier international women’s tournament on home soil in 2027, alongside the returning WTA 125 competition. (Adrian Co)
