Phoenix Mauls NorthPort, Goes 2-0 in PBA Philippine Cup
Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters recorded its second victory in the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup following a 110-105 victory over NorthPort Batang Pier on Thursday at the AUF Sports Arena & Cultural Center in Pampanga.
Jason Perkins tallied double-double 31 points and 12 rebounds, Matthew Wright added 23 markers, including four triples, while Justin Chua had 17 as the Fuel Masters tied TNT Tropang Giga on top at 2-0.
Both teams traded run in the first two quarters with the Batang Pier taking a slim five point advantage but a late surge by the Fuel Masters courtesy of Wright gave them a 55-51 halftime lead.
A strong third quarter start by the Phoenix Super LPG allowed them to take their largest lead at 14 points on consecutive hits from Wright and Perkins. NorthPort, however, rallied back to come to within 77-83.
NorthPort’s uprising continued in the fourth period as they took an 86-85 edge on a triple by Garvo Lanete but Phoenix Super LPG regained the upperhand at 103-94 on crucial hits by Jansen Rios, Perkins and Chua.
The Batang Pier, however, made its last push as back-to-back triples by Kevin Ferrer pulled them to within 104-106 with 13 seconds left but free throws by Perkins and RJ Jazul sealed the win for the Fuel Masters.
Christian Standhardinger finished with double-double 28 points and 11 rebounds as Sean Anthony added triple-double 23 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists as the Batang Pier dropped to 0-2.
