Phoenix’s Calvin Abueva Heads to PBA Bubble, Stint in the Philippine Cup Restart Still Up in the Air
Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters’ wish of having Calvin Abueva back in its lineup in time for the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup restart is getting clearer after being given a greenlight to join his’ teammates in the PBA Bubble.
Abueva was allowed by PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial to enter the Clark, Pampanga bubble on Tuesday following a meeting with him and Fuel Masters interim coach Michael “Topex” Robinson.
The catch, however, is it is still not clear whether Marcial will lift the indefinite suspension he slapped on Abueva on June, 2019 to allow the Pampanga-native to suit up for the Fuel Masters.
“This is considered a major breakthrough for Calvin and for the team,” Robinson said in an interview with the Business Mirror.
Robinson and Abueva also went to Games and Amusements Board office on Tuesday afternoon to secure a new playing license for the veteran forward but it was yet to be granted, according to GAB chairman Abraham Mitra.
The Fuel Masters entered the bubble on Monday without Abueva, who has been suspended indefinitely for 15 months now after his clothesline hit on TNT KaTropa import Terrence Jones and lewd gestures to KaTropa guard Bobby Ray Parks Jr.’s girlfriend.
Phoenix initially listed Abueva to its “PBA bubble” roster but withdrew his name on the advice of Marcial.
