Pirates sweep first round; massacre Cardinals

CJ Perez scored 16 points in the first half as Lyceum of the Philippines routed Mapua University, 97-74 to complete a first round sweep of the 93rd NCAA basketball tournament at the Filiol Arena in San Juan City.

Perez would finish the game with 18 markers as the Pirates encountered little resistance from an undermanned Mapua squad enroute to their ninth straight win.

Despite the sweep, Pirates’ coach Topex Robinson cautioned his boys that the tournament is far from over.

“There is nothing to celebrate because there are still nine games to go. We just need to keep honoring the game and find ways to keep on improving,” said Robinson.

Mapua played without team captain Andoy Estrella due to A torn MCL (medial collateral ligament).

Mapua skidded to 1-7.

In the first game, rookie Levi Dela Cruz had a breakout game to lead the Arellano Chiefs to an 87-81 come-from-behind victory over College of St. Benilde Blazers.

The win snapped the Chiefs four-game losing streak to improve to 3-5 win loss slate while the Blazers fell to their seventh loss in nine games.
